There is a rather troublesome companion who follows you everywhere.

They join you at breakfast.
They come to work with you.
They accompany you into important meetings.
And, rather inconveniently, they sometimes start talking at three o’clock in the morning.
I’m referring, of course, to the voice inside your head.
“You can’t do that.”
“You don’t have enough money.”
“What if it all goes wrong?”
“You’re too old.”
“You’re not good enough.”
And here’s the fascinating part.
Most of us never question it.
A thought appears inside our head, so naturally, we assume it must be true.
Florence Scovel Shinn would have suggested otherwise.
Your Thoughts Are Often Old Recordings
Imagine an old gramophone sitting quietly in the corner of your subconscious mind.
Throughout your life, records have been added to its collection.
Perhaps someone told you that money is difficult to earn.
Another person taught you that success was only for the lucky.
Maybe an embarrassing experience convinced you that you weren’t confident.
Eventually, these ideas became limiting beliefs.
Years later, something triggers one of them…
And the gramophone starts playing.
“Don’t take the risk.”
“You’ll probably fail.”
“People like you don’t become wealthy.”
The thought sounds remarkably convincing.
But it isn’t necessarily today’s truth.
It may simply be yesterday’s recording.
Your Subconscious Mind Loves Repetition
Florence understood something about the subconscious mind that remains enormously relevant today.
Repeat an idea often enough, and eventually it begins to feel true.
This is why the words we hear during childhood can remain with us decades later.
It’s also why positive affirmations can be useful when they’re practised consistently.
You’re gradually replacing an old recording with a new one.
This connects beautifully with the Law of Assumption.
If you continually assume that life is difficult, your attention naturally searches for evidence of difficulty.
Change the assumption, and you begin looking at life differently.
The world hasn’t necessarily changed overnight.
You have.
Don’t Argue With the Gramophone
Here’s where people often make things unnecessarily complicated.
When a negative thought appears, they wrestle with it.
“Why am I thinking this?”
“I must stop thinking negatively!”
“I’m ruining my manifestation!”
Florence might have smiled.
The easier response is simply:
“That’s an old recording. I don’t play that one anymore.”
No argument.
No drama.
No emergency meeting with the Universe.
Just recognition.
Then choose a better thought.
Think of one old belief you’ve carried for years.
Now imagine taking that record off the gramophone.
Replace it with:
“I choose thoughts that support the life I am creating.”
If that resonates with you, leave those words in the comments below.
Consider it your notice to the old gramophone that there’s a new management team in charge.
How to Manifest a Different Story
People searching for how to manifest often concentrate entirely on what they want.
More money.
Love.
Success.
Freedom.
But the Law of Attraction isn’t simply about wanting something strongly enough.
You also need to notice the beliefs contradicting what you’re asking for.
You can’t spend ten minutes visualising abundance and then spend the afternoon declaring that you’ll never have enough money.
Your inner conversation matters.
That’s where an abundance mindset begins.
Not by pretending problems don’t exist, but by refusing to turn temporary circumstances into permanent beliefs.
You Get to Choose the Next Record
Here’s the wonderful part.
You don’t have to believe everything you think.
A thought can arrive…
And you can simply let it pass.
You can even smile at it.
“Ah. That old record again.”
Then choose another.
Florence Scovel Shinn taught that words and expectations possess extraordinary creative power. Perhaps one of the greatest freedoms we can discover is realizing that yesterday’s programming doesn’t have to become tomorrow’s reality.
So pay attention to the gramophone.
Some of those records have been playing for far too long.
And remember:
Just because your mind plays it doesn’t mean you have to dance to it.
Have a wonderful day.
