Be Careful What You Put After “I Am” | Florence Scovel Shinn

Spread the magic

There are two little words you probably say dozens of times every day.

I am.

florence shinn

They seem harmless enough.

Until you listen to what comes next.

“I am terrible with money.”

“I am always tired.”

“I am unlucky.”

“I am too old.”

“I am never going to get ahead.”

Then, perhaps later that evening, you sit down, light a candle, put on some relaxing music, and solemnly announce:

“I am wealthy.”

“I am successful.”

“I am abundant.”

Florence Scovel Shinn might have raised an eyebrow.

What happened to the other sixteen hours?

The Power of “I Am”

Florence taught that words are enormously important because repeated words help shape our expectations, beliefs, and behavior.

And few statements are more personal than “I am.”

Every time you place something after those two words, you are making a statement about who you believe yourself to be.

Think about the difference between:

“I am struggling financially.”

and:

“I am becoming financially stronger every day.”

The first turns a temporary circumstance into an identity.

The second leaves the door open.

This is why I AM affirmations can be so powerful. They aren’t simply positive sentences repeated for five minutes. Used consistently, they can help challenge the old internal story you’ve been carrying around for years.

Your Subconscious Is Always Listening

Many of our negative “I am” statements have become automatic.

You don’t consciously decide to say them.

They simply appear.

“I am hopeless at this.”

“I am not confident.”

“I am just not lucky.”

But repetition matters.

Say something often enough and eventually it begins to feel less like an opinion and more like a fact.

Florence’s famous teaching, “Your Word Is Your Wand,” reminds us to be much more deliberate about the words we use.

If you are interested in manifestation, the Law of Attraction, or the Law of Assumption, start by listening to your ordinary conversations.

They may reveal far more than your affirmations do.

Try this one:

“I am open to extraordinary possibilities, unexpected abundance, and wonderful new opportunities.”

Say it slowly.

Then get on with your day.

There’s no need to repeat it 847 times while staring anxiously at the clock.

Try the 24-Hour “I Am” Experiment

For the next 24 hours, catch yourself whenever you say or think “I am.”

Don’t become obsessive about it.

Just notice.

When you catch a negative statement, change it.

“I am broke” becomes:

“I am creating greater abundance.”

“I am unlucky” becomes:

“I am expecting good things.”

“I am stuck” becomes:

“I am open to a new direction.”

This isn’t about pretending difficulties don’t exist.

It’s about refusing to make them part of your identity.

Choose What Comes Next

Perhaps that’s the real power of “I am.”

Those two words are followed by a blank space.

And every day, consciously or unconsciously, you’re filling it in.

So choose carefully.

Your past doesn’t have to fill in the blank.

Neither do your circumstances.

You do.

I am ________.

What will you put there?

If this post resonated with you, leave your own positive “I AM” statement in the comments below. Make it something you’d be delighted to see become part of your life.

Have a wonderful day.
