Florence Scovel Shinn: Who Was She?

Spread the magic

More than a century after she began teaching her unusual philosophy of life, Florence Scovel Shinn’s words are still being repeated around the world.

Her affirmations appear across social media. Her books continue to be read. Her ideas about prosperity, intuition, the power of words, and what she called the Divine Design sound remarkably similar to concepts discussed throughout the modern manifestation movement.

But who actually was Florence Scovel Shinn?

Before she became a metaphysical teacher, Florence lived a very different life.

Before Florence Became Florence

Florence Scovel was born in Camden, New Jersey, on September 24, 1871.

Long before anyone associated her with affirmations or spiritual law, Florence was an artist.

She studied at the prestigious Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and later married fellow artist Everett Shinn in 1898. Everett would become associated with the group of American artists known as The Eight and the artistic movement later linked with the Ashcan School.

The couple moved within the exciting artistic world of New York.

Florence established her own career as an illustrator, including work for children’s books and magazines.

Their home at 112 Waverly Place, near Washington Square, even had a small theatre built in its courtyard. Everett organized the Waverly Players and wrote plays in which Florence reportedly performed leading roles.

It’s difficult to imagine a more interesting beginning for the woman who would eventually tell us that life itself was a game.

A Very Different Chapter Begins

Florence and Everett divorced in 1912 after fourteen years of marriage.

Exactly how Florence’s inner transformation unfolded during the years that followed isn’t nearly as well documented as we might wish.

And perhaps that’s part of her mystery.

What we do know is that Florence eventually emerged as a metaphysical teacher and lecturer in New York, developing the wonderfully direct, conversational style that would become her trademark.

She wasn’t interested in making spirituality sound complicated.

Florence could take an enormous metaphysical idea and explain it through an everyday story.

She could talk about prosperity, faith, intuition, and spiritual law without sounding as though she’d swallowed a dictionary.

That accessibility would become one of her greatest strengths.

The Little Book Nobody Wanted

Then came 1925.

Florence had written a book called The Game of Life and How to Play It.

She was unable to find a publisher.

So she published it herself.

For an American woman in her fifties in 1925, that alone tells us something about Florence Scovel Shinn.

She wasn’t waiting for permission.

And the book contained an extraordinary opening idea:

Life wasn’t a battle.

Life was a game.

But according to Florence, you couldn’t play that game successfully without understanding its spiritual laws.

The book explored prosperity, the power of the spoken word, non-resistance, karma, forgiveness, intuition, the subconscious mind, and what Florence called our Divine Design.

These weren’t presented as dry philosophical theories.

Florence filled her writing with people, predicaments, unexpected outcomes, and memorable declarations.

Her personality was everywhere.

Your Word Is Your Wand

Florence followed her first book with Your Word Is Your Wand in 1928.

The title neatly captured one of her central beliefs.

Words have power.

What we repeatedly speak, expect, and imagine matters.

Florence encouraged people to stop continually declaring fear, limitation, and defeat and instead align their words with the good they wanted to experience.

She also emphasized intuition.

Don’t force everything.

Don’t decide that your good must arrive through one particular door.

Listen for guidance.

Expect Divine Order.

Allow life to surprise you occasionally.

Florence would probably have been rather good at manifestation in the age of Amazon. Place the order, expect delivery, and stop standing outside the warehouse demanding to know where the package is.

Why Are We Still Talking About Her?

Florence died in New York City on October 17, 1940.

Her story, however, didn’t end there.

Her books survived.

Her ideas traveled through generations of New Thought and personal-development readers, and today her work is being discovered by another audience interested in manifestation, the Law of Attraction, intuition, affirmations, and prosperity consciousness.

Perhaps that’s the most remarkable part of Florence Scovel Shinn’s biography.

She began as an artist.

She became an illustrator.

She performed in a tiny Greenwich Village theatre.

She experienced divorce and enormous social change.

Then, in her fifties, she self-published a book nobody else apparently wanted to publish.

More than 100 years later, we’re still reading it.

So, who was Florence Scovel Shinn?

Artist.

Illustrator.

Teacher.

Writer.

Self-publisher.

Metaphysician.

And perhaps, above everything else, a woman who believed that life contained invisible possibilities most of us had never been taught to look for.

And that is why, more than eight decades after her death, people are still discovering The Shinn Way.
