Divine timing can be a peculiar business. Especially when it involves a missed appointment, an angry railway conductor, and a woman who boards the wrong train entirely.

New York, 1897.

Miss Eleanor Whitcombe was having a thoroughly dreadful Tuesday.

Her umbrella had broken, her favorite hat was soaked, and the train carrying her to an important job interview had departed without her.

“Wonderful!” she muttered. “Perhaps tomorrow I’ll be struck by lightning.”

An elderly gentleman nearby glanced at the sky and quietly moved away.

Eleanor hurried onto the next train, only to discover twenty minutes later that it was heading in completely the wrong direction.

She had an appointment in Manhattan.

She was now heading toward Brooklyn.

The Stranger With the Silver Pocket Watch

At the next stop, Eleanor collapsed onto a station bench.

Beside her sat an elderly woman holding a silver pocket watch.

“Lost something, dear?”

“My future,” Eleanor replied dramatically.

“How inconvenient. Have you looked under the seat?”

Despite herself, Eleanor laughed.

The stranger introduced herself as Mrs. Bellamy, a retired theater owner.

Within minutes, they were talking about Eleanor’s greatest ambition.

Not the dreary office position she had been rushing toward.

Her real dream.

Writing plays.

Mrs. Bellamy listened carefully.

Then she reached into her handbag and produced a visiting card.

“My nephew manages a theater company. He’s desperately looking for new writers.”

Eleanor stared at the card.

For the first time that morning, she forgot about her ruined hat.

Florence Scovel Shinn and the Mystery of Divine Timing

Imagine Eleanor telling Florence Scovel Shinn this extraordinary story over afternoon tea.

Florence might have smiled and asked a rather mischievous question.

“Tell me, Eleanor. Which train was the wrong one?”

Florence taught that Divine Guidance could lead people toward opportunities they had never considered.

She also believed in Divine Selection, the possibility that something better suited to us might exist beyond our carefully arranged plans.

But there’s an important distinction.

Eleanor’s opportunity didn’t appear because she sat around waiting for a miracle.

She spoke to a stranger.

She shared her ambition.

And when an unexpected door opened, she walked through it.

Sometimes the most important part of trusting life is recognizing when it’s inviting you to do something different.

The Letter That Changed Everything

Three weeks later, Eleanor received two letters.

The first came from the company where she’d missed her interview.

The position had been filled.

Eleanor shrugged. She had almost forgotten about it.

The second letter came from Mrs. Bellamy’s nephew.

He loved Eleanor’s writing and wanted to commission her first play.

But there was something else.

Enclosed was a small newspaper clipping dated the morning of her disastrous journey.

RAILWAY DISRUPTION CAUSES CONFUSION ACROSS NEW YORK

Eleanor read the article twice.

Then she noticed something extraordinary.

The train she meant to catch had been delayed after it left the station. Had she boarded it, she would still have missed her interview.

She sat quietly for a moment.

Then she laughed.

She had spent that dreadful Tuesday believing everything was going wrong.

Yet the only train that had taken her anywhere worthwhile was the one she hadn’t intended to board.

Perhaps Florence Scovel Shinn would have called it Divine Order.

Perhaps Eleanor would simply have called it the strangest Tuesday of her life.

Either way, she never again assumed that an unexpected detour meant she’d lost her way.

And she bought herself a new hat.

A considerably more expensive one.
