Have you ever noticed how some people seem to expect good things to happen to them?
They don’t necessarily earn more than everyone else. They aren’t always the cleverest person in the room. Yet opportunities seem to arrive at just the right moment. Doors open. Helpful people appear. Money flows in and somehow stays.
Florence Scovel Shinn believed this wasn’t luck.
It was an expectation.
In fact, I can almost imagine Florence smiling if she saw someone checking their bank balance six times before breakfast.
“Money is rather like a timid guest. Stare at it anxiously, and it may leave early. Welcome it with quiet confidence, and it often stays for tea.”
That is wonderfully Victorian, but it’s also wonderfully true.
The more we obsess over what we don’t have, the more we keep our attention fixed on lack. And according to Florence, whatever consistently holds your attention eventually finds a way into your experience.
The first step towards greater wealth isn’t earning more money.
It’s raising your riches from within.
Wealth Begins Long Before Money Arrives
Most people think wealth starts with a larger salary, a successful business or a winning investment.
Florence would gently disagree.
She believed prosperity begins long before the first dollar arrives in your bank account. It begins in your thinking.
Imagine two people receiving exactly the same amount of money.
One immediately worries it won’t be enough.
The other feels grateful, manages it wisely and expects more opportunities to come.
Externally, they have the same amount.
Internally, they’re living in completely different worlds.
One is rehearsing scarcity.
The other is rehearsing abundance.
Florence understood that life has an extraordinary habit of agreeing with our deepest expectations.
Not always overnight.
But remarkably often over time.
Stop Rehearsing Poverty
Without realising it, many of us spend years practising the language of lack.
“I can’t afford that.”
“I’m always broke.”
“Money disappears as quickly as it arrives.”
“It must be nice for other people.”
We say these things so casually that they almost become part of our identity.
Florence would probably have smiled kindly before asking,
“My dear… if you keep giving those words so much practice, how do you expect Prosperity to remember its lines?”
It’s a humorous thought, but it carries an important lesson.
Every repeated sentence becomes an instruction to your subconscious mind.
Every instruction shapes your expectations.
And your expectations quietly influence the choices you make every day.
If you constantly expect struggle, you’ll notice problems first.
If you expect opportunity, you’ll begin to notice possibilities that have always been there.
Here’s a simple question.
If someone secretly listened to every conversation you had this week, would they conclude you expected abundance…
…or shortage?
Sometimes that answer tells us everything we need to know.
Become Comfortable With Prosperity
One of the biggest misconceptions about wealth is that wanting it somehow makes you selfish.
Florence never taught that.
She believed abundance was part of our divine inheritance.
After all, what loving parent wants their children to struggle unnecessarily?
Money itself isn’t good or bad.
It’s simply a tool.
In generous hands, it builds schools.
It feeds families.
It creates businesses.
It funds dreams.
The real goal isn’t to worship money.
It’s to become comfortable receiving it.
That means appreciating beautiful things without guilt.
Give generously whenever you can.
Taking care of what you already own.
Walking with quiet confidence rather than quiet worry.
Prosperity isn’t always measured by what’s in your wallet.
Sometimes it’s reflected in how peacefully you sleep at night.
Raise Your Riches Every Day
Fortunately, Florence’s approach was beautifully simple.
You don’t need complicated rituals or endless affirmations.
Just consistency.
Each morning, spend a minute imagining one prosperous moment.
Perhaps you’re paying for dinner without checking the price.
Perhaps you’re booking the holiday you’ve always dreamed about.
Perhaps you’re helping someone you love without worrying whether you can afford to.
Don’t simply picture it.
Feel it.
Experience the relief.
The gratitude.
The quiet confidence.
Then carry that feeling into your day.
Whenever thoughts of lack appear, and they will, don’t criticise yourself.
Simply redirect them.
Replace “I can’t afford it” with “How might I afford it?”
Replace “Nothing ever changes” with “Wonderful opportunities are finding me every day.”
Those small adjustments seem insignificant.
Yet they gradually become a new way of thinking.
And new thinking creates new expectations.
New expectations create new decisions.
New decisions create new results.
That’s how prosperity quietly enters a life.
Not through force.
Not through worry.
But through steady, confident expectation.
Florence never promised that bags of money would fall from the sky.
She simply reminded us that life has an extraordinary habit of agreeing with whatever we consistently believe.
So perhaps the question isn’t whether wealth is looking for you.
Perhaps the question is…
Are you finally becoming the sort of person wealth would recognise?
