Imagine you’re walking down a busy street.
People hurry past, eyes fixed on their phones or the destination ahead. Suddenly, you notice a single penny lying on the pavement.
What do you do?
Walk straight past it?
Or stop, smile, and pick it up?
Most people would probably leave it where it is. After all, it’s only a penny.
But Florence Scovel Shinn might have seen it rather differently.
She believed life responds to our attitude towards receiving. Every gift, no matter how small, sends a message. When we gratefully accept what life offers, we quietly tell the universe, “I’m ready for more.”
The Penny Is Never Just a Penny
It’s easy to dismiss small blessings.
A compliment.
A surprise refund.
A free cup of coffee.
A chance meeting with an old friend.
A penny on the pavement.
Individually, they may seem insignificant. Yet together, they reveal something important about our mindset.
Do we appreciate life’s gifts?
Or do we overlook them because they don’t seem big enough?
Florence often taught that abundance flows through expected and unexpected channels. Those channels don’t always begin with dramatic windfalls. More often, they begin with small moments that test whether we are paying attention.
Learning to Receive
Many of us have been taught how to work hard.
Far fewer of us have been taught how to receive.
Think about how often someone offers a compliment, and we immediately dismiss it.
“Oh, this old thing?”
“It was nothing.”
“Anyone could have done it.”
The same thing happens with abundance.
Sometimes we unconsciously push away the very things we’ve been asking for because they arrive in forms we weren’t expecting.
Receiving isn’t about greed.
It’s about gratitude.
When you accept life’s small gifts with appreciation, you create space for larger ones to follow.
The Millionaire Who Picked Up a Penny
There’s a story about a wealthy businessman walking through London with friends.
As they crossed the street, he suddenly stopped, bent down, and picked up a penny.
One of his companions laughed.
“Surely you don’t need that!”
The millionaire smiled and slipped the coin into his pocket.
“It isn’t about the value,” he replied. “It’s about never ignoring abundance when it comes my way.”
Whether the story is fact or folklore hardly matters.
The lesson remains the same.
Abundance isn’t measured by the size of the gift.
It’s measured by your willingness to receive it.
Midway Reset
Today, try this simple affirmation:
“I gratefully receive every blessing, great and small. Abundance flows to me through expected and unexpected channels.”
If those words resonate with you, leave this in the comments below:
“I gratefully receive abundance.”
Sometimes a small declaration is the first step towards a much bigger transformation.
Every Great River Begins With a Drop
We often imagine abundance arriving all at once.
A lottery win.
A huge promotion.
A life-changing opportunity.
Yet life rarely works that way.
More often, abundance begins quietly.
A new idea.
A helpful conversation.
A small opportunity that grows into something extraordinary.
Florence Scovel Shinn reminded us that the universe is constantly communicating. The question isn’t whether abundance is available.
The question is whether we’re willing to notice it.
So the next time you see a penny on the pavement, don’t think about its value.
Think about what it represents.
It may just be life’s gentle reminder that abundance is already making its way towards you.
