Imagine, just for a moment, that your future could watch you.

Not metaphorically.

Actually, watch you.

It sees what you do when you wake up, hears what you say about money, watches how you react when something goes wrong, and notices every opportunity you dismiss because you don’t feel ready.

By lunchtime, your future self may already be wondering whether some kind of intervention is required.

Florence Scovel Shinn would probably have loved this idea because so much of her teaching concerned the relationship between what we think, what we say, what we expect, and what eventually appears in our lives.

Your future, in other words, doesn’t begin tomorrow.

You’re rehearsing it today.

What Is Your Future Hearing?

Consider the seemingly harmless things we say without thinking.

“I’ll never have enough money.”

“Nothing ever works out for me.”

“I’m too old to start again.”

“I’ve never been lucky.”

Florence placed enormous importance on the spoken word. She believed that continually declaring limitations was effectively giving life instructions we wouldn’t consciously choose.

Modern psychology gives us another interesting angle. Expectations can influence attention, decisions, persistence, and behavior. If you’ve already decided something won’t work, you’re unlikely to approach it with the same enthusiasm as someone expecting a positive outcome.

So imagine your future listening whenever you describe yourself.

Would it be encouraged?

Or would it be frantically trying to send a telegram?

Your Future Is Watching What You Do

This isn’t only about positive thinking.

Suppose an idea appears.

Start the business.

Write the book.

Make the call.

Apply for the job.

Take the trip.

You feel excited for approximately eleven seconds.

Then your internal legal department arrives with seventeen excellent reasons why you shouldn’t do it.

That’s where your future really starts paying attention.

Florence believed in Divine Guidance, but guidance isn’t terribly useful if we continually ignore it.

Sometimes the path forward begins with an idea that seems inconvenient, unlikely, or even slightly ridiculous.

A Quick Experiment

For the rest of today, imagine your future self is quietly following you around.

Before you speak negatively about yourself, remember:

They’re listening.

Before you dismiss an opportunity:

They’re watching.

And before you continue reading, leave this declaration in the comments:

“I am creating a future I can’t wait to meet.”

Consider it a message to the spy.

Stop Waiting to Become That Person

We often imagine our future selves as someone completely different.

More confident.

More prosperous.

More adventurous.

Possibly thinner, although let’s not get carried away.

But that person isn’t going to appear magically on January 1st wearing a new outfit and carrying a better bank balance.

You create them gradually through today’s choices.

That doesn’t mean every decision must be perfect. Florence’s idea of Divine Order leaves plenty of room for wrong turns, unexpected detours, and doors that stubbornly refuse to open.

Sometimes the detour becomes the destination.

Give Your Future Something Worth Watching

So, what would happen if you lived today as though your future really were spying on you?

Perhaps you’d speak more carefully.

Take the opportunity you’ve been postponing.

Stop declaring yourself unlucky.

Follow an idea.

Expect something good.

Your future isn’t somewhere in the distance waiting for you to arrive.

You’re building it now.

So give your future self something worth watching.

And perhaps, somewhere down the road, they’ll look back at today and whisper:

“Thank goodness you did that.”
