When was the last time you were genuinely excited about something?
Not pleased.
Not mildly looking forward to Friday night’s takeaway.
Giddy.
That wonderful feeling when you wake up and immediately remember that something exciting is happening.
Unfortunately, somewhere between becoming sensible adults, paying bills, doing laundry, and discovering that our knees now make noises, many of us lose it.
Life isn’t necessarily bad.
It just becomes Tuesday.
Again.
You wake up at the same time. Think the same thoughts. Follow the same routine. Talk to the same people. Watch the same television. Go to bed.
Then, tomorrow, you produce a remarkably accurate remake.
Congratulations.
You’ve become stuck in a rut.
Florence Would Probably Tell You to Change the Script
Florence Scovel Shinn believed our words and expectations played an enormous role in shaping our experience of life.
And that’s interesting when you’re feeling stuck.
Listen to what people say:
“Nothing exciting ever happens to me.”
“Every day is the same.”
“I’m too old to start something new.”
“That’s just my life.”
Florence might have raised an eyebrow at that last one.
Because if “your word is your wand,” perhaps repeatedly announcing that nothing changes isn’t the ideal spell.
You cannot spend every day rehearsing yesterday and then complain when tomorrow knows all the lines.
So let’s change them.
For the next seven days, begin every morning with these seven words:
“Something wonderful is beginning in my life.”
Don’t worry about deciding what the wonderful thing is.
That’s half the fun.
Florence believed in Divine Guidance. She encouraged people to declare their good while remaining open to unexpected channels through which it might appear.
So say those seven words, then watch.
And if you’re taking the challenge, put them in the comments:
SOMETHING WONDERFUL IS BEGINNING IN MY LIFE.
Consider it your official resignation from the Department of Same Old, Same Old.
Now Do Something Today You Wouldn’t Do Yesterday
This is important.
Getting your spark back isn’t about sitting on the sofa repeating affirmations while waiting for excitement to break into your house.
Interrupt the pattern.
Take a different route.
Visit somewhere you’ve never been.
Send the email you’ve been avoiding.
Start the project.
Book something.
Learn something ridiculous.
Talk to somebody new.
Follow an idea that keeps nudging you.
You don’t need to sell everything, move to Peru, buy a Harley-Davidson, and announce that you’re becoming a llama farmer.
One small change can introduce something incredibly powerful into a stale life:
possibility.
And perhaps those unexpected impulses deserve more attention.
That place you suddenly feel like visiting.
The person you keep thinking about calling.
The idea that won’t quite leave you alone.
Coincidence?
Intuition?
Divine Guidance?
Who knows?
But occasionally, following one small nudge can lead somewhere you could never have planned.
Get Giddy Again
Being stuck in a rut doesn’t mean you’ve lost your mojo forever.
Perhaps you’ve simply stopped giving life enough opportunities to surprise you.
So tomorrow morning, before checking your phone, the news, your bank account, or whether the world has fallen apart overnight, say:
“Something wonderful is beginning in my life.”
Then behave as though it’s true. Imagine yourself having a whole new lease of life.
Start opening new doors
Change things, interrupt the same old patterns.
Follow a nudge.
Give tomorrow some new material to work with.
Because you don’t need to know what the next chapter contains.
You just have to stop rereading the last one.
