What if you gave Florence Scovel Shinn control of your financial attitude for seven days?

Don’t panic.

I’m not suggesting you hand over your debit card to a woman born in 1871.

But Florence had a rather interesting idea about prosperity that we don’t hear nearly as much about as affirmations and visualization:

Prepare for the good you say you’re expecting.

In The Game of Life and How to Play It, Florence tells the story of a woman who wanted greater prosperity but whose home was in complete disorder. Florence told her that if she wanted riches, she should first become orderly. The woman began cleaning, rearranging furniture, sorting drawers, and generally evicting chaos. Florence says she subsequently received a substantial financial gift from a relative.

Now, I’m not promising that cleaning your kitchen cupboard will cause Uncle Herbert to leave you $50,000.

Mine certainly hasn’t.

But there’s a fascinating principle here.

If you’re expecting prosperity, start making room for it.

So, welcome to the Florence Shinn 7-Day Money Experiment.

Day 1: Give Your Wallet Some Dignity

Open your wallet or purse.

If it contains seventeen old receipts, an expired coupon, three mystery loyalty cards, and something from a coffee shop that closed in 2019, clean it out.

Florence used the wonderful image of the “magic purse of the Spirit”, imagining a purse continually replenished rather than depleted.

Treat yours like it matters.

Day 2: Put One Money Mess in Order

Unopened bill? Forgotten subscription? Bank account you haven’t checked?

Deal with one thing.

We’re replacing avoidance with order.

Day 3: Bless the Money Going Out

Florence’s philosophy was unusual here. Instead of fearing money leaving, she taught people to bless what they had and resist the mentality of scarcity.

So, when you pay for something today, try gratitude instead of:

“GOOD GRIEF, HOW MUCH?”

You can resume shouting at the electricity company tomorrow.

Your Declaration

If you’re joining the experiment, write this in the comments:

I AM READY FOR MORE PROSPERITY.

Then say it aloud.

Not desperately.

Not while refreshing your banking app every eleven seconds.

Say it as a decision.

Day 4: Clear Some Space

Clear your desk, workspace, handbag, kitchen drawer, or wherever disorder has established its headquarters.

Think of it symbolically:

I’m making room for something better.

Day 5: Follow a Hunch

Florence placed enormous importance on intuition. In one of her stories, a woman with only eight dollars followed an unexpected hunch to travel home. That decision led to a chance connection which Florence says eventually brought her thousands of dollars.

Today, pay attention.

An idea?

Someone you should contact?

Something you suddenly feel inspired to investigate?

Don’t automatically dismiss it.

Day 6: Do Something That Could Create Money

This is where we leave the sofa.

Send the email. List the item. Make the offer. Finish the project. Apply for the opportunity.

Florence herself taught that after speaking the word, a person should remain alert for a definite lead.

Day 7: Look Back

Did anything change?

Perhaps money arrived.

Perhaps you saved some.

Maybe an opportunity appeared, an idea surfaced, or you simply feel more confident and organized around money.

That’s the experiment.

No promises of instant riches.

Just seven days of order, expectation, intuition, gratitude, and action.

And perhaps that’s the real question Florence leaves us with:

If you truly expected greater prosperity to enter your life, what would you do differently today?
