Have you ever looked at your life and thought:
“This isn’t bad… but surely this can’t be the whole thing?”
Nothing is dramatically wrong. The roof isn’t leaking. Nobody is chasing you down the street demanding money. The cat still acknowledges your existence occasionally.
And yet something feels… finished.
You’ve outgrown the job, the routine, the surroundings, perhaps even the person you’ve become.
Florence Scovel Shinn would probably have found this rather exciting.
Because Florence believed we weren’t condemned to keep reproducing yesterday simply because we’d become rather good at it.
Her philosophy was built around the extraordinary power of the spoken word, expectation, faith, and Divine Guidance.
In other words, if you want a different life, stop spending every morning announcing that you’re stuck with the old one.
Stop Introducing Yourself As Your Past
We all carry an invisible biography around.
“I’m not adventurous.”
“I’m terrible with money.”
“I’m too old to start again.”
“I’ve always been shy.”
“People like me don’t do things like that.”
After enough repetition, these stop sounding like opinions and begin sounding like facts.
Florence famously taught:
“Your word is your wand.”
And there’s the problem.
You may be waving that wand enthusiastically in completely the wrong direction.
Reinvention begins when you stop treating your previous identity as a legally binding contract.
Instead of asking:
“Who have I always been?”
Try asking:
“Who am I becoming?”
That’s a much more interesting question.
When You Need More Than A Small Change
Sometimes reinvention isn’t about changing your morning routine or buying a particularly adventurous new hat.
You know something bigger needs to change.
That’s exactly why I wrote The Escape Code: How To Reinvent Yourself And Make A Life You’ll Love Waking Up To.
It’s for that strange point in life when you realize you’ve outgrown the script you’ve been following and want practical help creating the next one.
Because you are allowed to start again.
At 30.
At 50.
At 70.
Whenever you’re ready.
Give the New You Something To Do
Florence wasn’t simply about sitting in an armchair issuing instructions to the Universe while everyone else did the heavy lifting.
Her teachings repeatedly emphasized watching for Divine Guidance and then acting upon the lead you receive.
So, if you want to reinvent yourself, do something your old identity wouldn’t expect.
Go somewhere different.
Learn something new.
Send the email.
Meet new people.
Apply for something.
Start the project.
Change the environment.
Say yes occasionally.
Say no occasionally.
You don’t have to sell everything, disappear to Peru, and return six months later calling yourself Moonbeam.
Small changes send an important message:
The old pattern is no longer in charge.
And then remain curious.
Perhaps an unexpected conversation leads somewhere.
An idea refuses to leave you alone.
A door opens.
You suddenly feel drawn towards something you would previously have dismissed.
Maybe that’s psychology. Maybe it’s intuition. Perhaps, as Florence believed, there is a greater intelligence guiding us towards our good.
We don’t have to settle that argument today.
We can simply follow the breadcrumbs.
Reinventing yourself isn’t pretending your past never happened.
It’s deciding that your past doesn’t automatically get to write your future.
Speak differently.
Expect differently.
Act differently.
And give life permission to surprise you.
Because perhaps the person you’re trying to become isn’t as far away as you imagine.
P.S. If you’d like to explore how your words, beliefs, expectations, and assumptions can influence the life you create, discover The Manifestation Code, where I take Florence’s timeless ideas and explore manifestation, the Law of Attraction, and the Law of Assumption for modern life.
